Every winter a version of the same conversation happens in this bay. A visitor from somewhere cooler hits a few shots, looks at the screen, and says some variant of "well, that is the altitude". Then someone else says it is really the dry air. Then a third party says it is the heat, and everyone agrees it is probably all three and moves on.
All three are real. What almost nobody has is any sense of their relative sizes, and the relative sizes are so lopsided that the popular ranking is close to backwards.
Since this studio has been logging bay conditions on every session sheet since 2013, we are in an unusually good position to say something concrete about it. What follows uses our own file: thousands of sheets, all carrying a header, spread across every month of the year at a fixed elevation of four hundred and sixty-six feet.
The Three Contributors, Ranked by Size
Ranked by how much they actually move a carry figure in this valley, largest first.
- Temperature. Comfortably the largest. It is also the one that varies most here, which compounds its importance.
- Elevation. Meaningful, entirely fixed, and therefore uninteresting once you know it.
- Humidity. Almost nothing, and pointing in the opposite direction to what nearly everyone assumes.
Take them in reverse order, because the last one needs dealing with before it can stop distracting from the first.
Humidity, Which Barely Registers
The universal belief is that dry air is thin air and that the desert's famously low humidity is doing a large share of the work. Two problems with this.
The first is that the direction is wrong. Water vapour is lighter than the nitrogen and oxygen it displaces, so damp air is very slightly less dense than dry air at the same temperature and pressure. Humid air lets a ball fly marginally further, not shorter. Dry desert air is, on this axis alone, working very slightly against you.
The second is that the size is negligible. Across the full range this valley produces, from about four per cent relative humidity on a bad August afternoon to sixty on a rare wet January morning, the direct effect on a carry figure is under a yard for most clubs. It is smaller than the shot-to-shot variation of a good player and considerably smaller than the width of the spread column on anybody's sheet.
So the thing everyone cites first is, in this valley, a rounding error pointing the wrong way. Worth saying clearly because it takes up a great deal of conversational oxygen that would be better spent on the next item.
Elevation, Which Is Real and Boring
The studio floor sits at four hundred and sixty-six feet. Most valley courses sit within a few hundred feet of that, some a little below sea level out toward the eastern end.
Higher means less air above you pressing down, which means less dense air to push through, which means a ball that holds its speed better and travels further. This is genuine, it is well understood, and at four hundred and sixty-six feet it is worth roughly one per cent of carry compared to sea level. Call it a yard and a half on a mid iron, two and a half on a driver.
That is not nothing. It is also completely fixed. Unlike the weather, the elevation of your golf course will be the same next Tuesday. Once it is in the header and accounted for in the travel column, there is nothing further to think about.
It is worth noting for perspective that this is a mild elevation. Players who conflate Palm Springs with genuine mountain golf are overestimating us considerably; a course at five thousand feet is playing a different game entirely, and ours is a modest adjustment by comparison.
Temperature, Which Is the Whole Story
Now the one that matters. Warm air is expanded air, expanded air is less dense, and less dense air offers less resistance. Cold air is the reverse.
The effect is roughly linear across the range golf is played in, and in this valley the range is enormous. A January morning round starting at fifty-two degrees and an August afternoon at a hundred and eight are separated by fifty-six degrees, which is a larger annual swing than almost anywhere people play golf regularly.
Here is what that looks like against a reference, using the middle of our own recorded range as the baseline.

Thirteen yards between the coldest and hottest rows, on a six iron, in one valley, with one swing. That is more than a full club.
Compare that against the one and a half yards our elevation contributes and the sub-yard humidity term, and the ranking becomes hard to argue with. In the Coachella Valley, temperature is not one of three factors. It is the factor, and the other two are footnotes.
Why They Do Not Simply Add Up
The word in the title is deliberate. These effects are multiplicative rather than additive, and the distinction matters once you start combining them.
Each contributor changes the density of the air by some proportion, and the ball then flies through the result. Two effects each worth three per cent do not produce six per cent; they produce a shade over six point zero nine per cent, because the second acts on what the first already produced. At the small percentages golf deals in the difference is minor, and I mention it mostly because the mental model matters more than the arithmetic.
The mental model that follows from it is the useful part: there is no fixed "desert bonus" to add to your sea-level yardages. There is a bay reading, a course reading, and an honest statement of what each was. A player who learns "add five per cent in Palm Springs" has replaced one wrong number with another wrong number and gained only confidence.
What Follows Practically
Three things, and none of them require you to do arithmetic on a golf course.
Know what temperature your card was built at. If a fitting produced your yardages on a hundred-and-five degree afternoon and you now play mostly in January, the whole card is about three per cent long and you have no way of knowing that unless somebody wrote the temperature down.
Expect your set to behave differently by season, not just your driver. The percentage is broadly similar across clubs, so a three per cent shift moves every club, which means the absolute gaps between them shift too. Your long clubs move further in yards than your short ones, and a ladder that stepped evenly in July steps slightly differently in January.
Stop attributing seasonal change to your swing. This is the one that costs people actual enjoyment. Every winter, players who have lost eight yards conclude they are getting old or getting worse. Sometimes true. Frequently it is fifty-five degrees outside and the ball is doing exactly what physics says it should.
None of that is exotic. It is the ordinary business of stating what a measurement was taken under, which is why there is a header on every sheet that leaves this building.
